Pain changes us…and we can change it. Learn how to melt away your pain patterns on the mat with a few very special self-massage tools. Join Genevieve Houck in this self-massage exploration, a massage therapist who is slowly but surely unwinding out of daily chronic pain with the help of Iynegar rehabilitative yoga techniques, mantra, and self massage.
We shall start with a daily routine that can be done in the morning–such as the Tibetan rites, Chinese exercises for longevity, and Emotional Acupressure. Then we will work on arm and leg activations in a few key poses and stretches, paying attention to where we place our weight and what strength imbalances are present. Attention to how we sleep, hold things, and carry ourselves will be explored, as well as feeling into where we are weak and need strengthened, and where we are tight and need stretched.
We will end with a long, luxurious self-massage on the mat with a Thumbby, Iyengar noodle, and other props. Starting with a mediation on trigger points, Genevieve will guide you through the emotional and physical sensations of acute and latent areas of discomfort, with the help of the liquid music of ‘Dixon’s Violin.’ Targeting areas of concern, you will build your own therapeutic self-care routine. Genevieve will be assisting you with rehabilitative exercise and self-massage moves to flesh out the self-massage practice you create. Bring what awareness of your pain patterns you have to the mat, and let’s work them out!
This work has saved my life, and I am honored to share it with you. We are self-healing works of art, when we have the knowledge base and tools to take care of ourselves. The massage tools used will be available for purchase at the end of class.
Tuesday January 15th: We will focus on the importance of working out the temple, jaw, and neck, for sufferers of migraines, TMJ, sleeping difficulties, neurological issues, and anxiety.
Tuesday January 29th: We will focus on the soft parts of the body that therapists are hesitant to work on many people, due to sensitivity and the personal nature of these areas. The psoas, groin, armpits, and chest will be explored. These areas are integral areas to cover when dealing with neck, back, and shoulder pain.
Tuesday February 12th: Couples Massage for Valentine’s Day! Bring a friend, bring a lover, bring yourself–alone or together, you are welcome to come get your self-care on. We shall be exploring partner massage and a few key partner yoga poses, cupping and gua sha techniques for breaking up scar tissue, and myofasical unwinding. Myofascial unwinding is a beautiful therapy where you ‘hold and cup’ an area on someone else so that it feels supported, and allow it to move as it wants to. The body knows how to heal itself, and it’s starts to unwind as it moves. We will end with a self-care meditation that calms our spirit.
